About Gotham Nights
The Gotham Nights Blog consists of two writers, who met and became best friends through their love of the arts. Our base of operation is New York City. Though neither of us lives there, we spend more time in NY than in our home states, and we hope to move there eventually. The name of our blog makes reference to a couple of things. The word “Gotham” makes a double reference to the afore-mentioned real-life city that we adore as well as that wonderful, fictional city of our favorite D.C. Comic book series. The word “night” refers to the fact that this is not our paying day job, but a labor of love that we create in our spare time, usually at night.
We invite you to read our blog, in which we will focus on reviews of various art forms, with the ocassional political commentary. Because we are centered in NYC, our blog will feature primarily reviews of films and theatre that can be found in NY. We realize that great theatre and films exist in other cities and coutries, but we can’t be everywhere.
In short, enjoy Gotham Nights, and leave us a comment to let us know what you think!

why do you call the fictional Gotham City “wonderful?” Have you ever read a Batman comic or book? (please post this, I would like some discussion on this if you guys don’t mind.)
Yes, we have read Batman. Year One and The Dark Long Halloween. That was ages ago, however. We are also fans of the films (except for the Schulmacher abominations) and the 90s animated series. When we call the fictional Gotham “wonderful” we are making reference to the fact that we love reading about it and seeing it onscreen, but to clarify, we would NOT like to live there!
Our primary evocation in the blog title is the real life Gotham, the city that we love above all others.
Where and when, if ever, is NYC referred to as Gotham City? I live on the other side of the country so I’ve never heard this.
Schulmacher? “abominations?”
Sounds to me as though you’re a little biased in how some might interpret the world of the Dark Knight. I won’t try to tell you Batman and Robin was at all enjoyable, but Batman Forever isn’t too shabby. I know others, and even myself in a few ways, who argue Frank Miller is one of the worst writers of Batman ever, not in Year One though. If you’re really Batman fans, read some more of it. The titles you mentioned are decent, but not the defining works in the Batman canon.
Wait wait wait, I’m confused…you say you wouldn’t want to live in Gotham City, but “the word “Gotham” makes a double reference to the afore-mentioned real-life city (New York), that [you] adore” and you both “hope to move there eventually.”
Batman Forever isn’t too shabby, but it’s hardly the holy grail of Batman stories. The titles I mentioned are just two of the ones I read, though I agree that I should read more. As I said, it was long ago, but I am interested in returning to the comics.
To answer your last question, I wouldn’t want to live in the fictional Gotham, but I dream of living in the real Gotham. I adore both (reading about one, and actually visiting and living in the other).
Okay, I was just giving you a hard time. Maybe you should read some Batman titles and do a review on those…hmm?
